NOTE: IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY READ DPi, PLEASE GO BACK AND READ THAT ONE FIRST. IT GIVES IMPORTANT BACKGROUND ON THE NUMBERS.
The last of our Prototype classes is the one that saw the
most diversity in terms of car count. LMP3 had 25 different drivers stand on
the podium over the course of their season. Just like LMP2, LMP3 had 7 races total
but only 6 of them paying points. The drivers who took home the most hardware
were the champions, Jon Bennett and Colin Braun with 5 trophies each. They won
two races (Mid-Ohio and CTMP) but it was the 74 Riley that won the most. That
car found victory lane at Daytona, Watkins Glen, and Road America. They also
had the most poles, with two going the way of Gar Robinson. The other teams to
win races were Sean Creech Motorsport, at the 12 Hours of Sebring, and Andretti
Autosport, at Petit Le Mans.

Notice anything about this chart? The nice rainbow color isn’t
exactly in order! There’s a big change afoot here, with the 30 of JR III Racing
moving up to 2nd in the championship! They earned the fifth worst
points out of the full season contenders and finished third in the season long
battle. Surprisingly the 54 earned the second most points in qualifying,
despite Jon Bennett not earning a pole all season. The 74 took three poles, and
each the 33 and 36 got one.
Qualifying to Race:
As noted above, the CORE Autosport car did not earn a pole,
yet earned the most podium finishes, so it comes as no surprise that they
gained the most positions over the course of the year with 17 spots positive.
The car that struggled the most was the 36 Andretti Autosport machine, which
had a few mechanical issues, ultimately resulting in it losing 20 positions.
On Track by Driver Performances:
The LMP3 category is designed to help show young talent, and
this year, it accomplished that in spades. The strongest driver was Felipe
Fraga, who earned 3 Fastest Laps and had an average of 2.5. He was ahead of
Malthe Jakobsen (2.8) and Colin Braun (3). The opposite end of the spectrum had
Lance Willsey on 22.2 and Orey Fidani on 20.71.
Fraga’s average time off pace was 0.134 of a second! Fidani
was the furthest off pace, at 4.558, making the pace of Fraga even more
impressive! In terms of being off a codriver, Malthe Jakobsen, Gabby Chaves,
and Colin Braun were never beaten by a co-driver and thus have a perfect score
of 0. The furthest off co-driver was Joao Barbosa, who didn’t really have a
fair run at Road America and thus his numbers were skewed. The other driver
who’s pace was off was Jon Bennett, who averaged 3.322 seconds off Colin Braun.
Shout out for Jarrett Andretti, who averaged 13 on the FL
positioning, ahead of the other second drivers by quite a bit! He really showed
lots of improvement over the course of the season, as evidenced by the win in
the final race of the season. He’ll be a real contender for the championship
next year.
